Capstone Research

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research for a Capstone

The right method is not the one that sounds more rigorous. It is the one that can produce evidence capable of answering the research question.

Start with the question, not the method

Students sometimes decide “I want to do interviews” or “I want to run a survey” before the study is defined. Reverse that sequence. First identify what the study needs to understand or test; then choose the kind of evidence that can answer it.

When qualitative research is often a better fit

Qualitative approaches are useful when the study needs to explore experiences, perceptions, meanings, processes, practices, or how participants understand a phenomenon. The evidence is typically rich, contextual, and interpretive rather than intended to estimate a population value.

When quantitative research is often a better fit

Quantitative approaches are useful when the study needs to measure variables, compare groups, examine relationships, estimate prevalence, or test hypotheses using numerical data. The research question should name measurable concepts clearly enough that they can be operationalized.

Do not confuse sample size with rigor

A larger sample does not automatically make a study better, and a smaller qualitative sample is not automatically weak. Rigor depends on whether the design, sampling, data collection, analysis, and claims fit the research purpose.

Check the alignment chain

  1. What exactly is the problem?
  2. What gap does the study address?
  3. What does the purpose say the study will do?
  4. What must the research question answer?
  5. What kind of data can answer that question?
  6. What analysis can legitimately turn that data into an answer?

A useful decision rule

If the question is fundamentally about understanding how people experience or describe something, qualitative logic may fit. If it is fundamentally about measuring how much, how often, whether groups differ, or whether variables relate, quantitative logic may fit. The actual wording and context matter.
